Frustration sets in

Just figured out that my old pedometer had been mysteriously changed at some point in November to measure my stride at 48 inches as opposed to 38. This could be why I am not coming up with the same mileage as Dirt Runner (ya think??!!)

More infuriating is that I am running MUCH slower than I thought I was. This was a major mind game for me today. I could barely keep myself in the run thinking the whole time only about "it's not as far as I thought, I am not as fast as I thought." The great progress I believed I have been making is not so great after all.

The lungs are really talking to me right now, which could account for the slower times, but one thing is for sure. I have a new set of goals for 2007.

So the bad news isn't that bad. I mean, really. I can run. I have the freedom to run. I have challenges that I know I'll overcome. Every day that I wake up and draw another breath is another opportunity to better myself.

The good news. Since Sept. I've gone from 145 to 138. 7 pounds. Not as much as I'd like. But a good start. Goal weight is 125. Nursing the baby will always leave me with an extra 10 or so pounds. Six kids in, I've accepted this.

Waist measurement in November was 37.5". This week - 33.0" Four and 1/2 inches. Pretty darn good!

Goals for 2007

1. Get consistently under 9.30/mile
2. Run trails more often
3. RTW as often as possible
4. Increase mileage to 35 miles per week
5. Run without injury.
6. Know when to rest.
7. Run a 10K
8. Run a 25K
9. Run Sunmart 50K

Ambitious goals I'm sure, but goals they are.

12/28/06

Ran with DirtRunner for an unclear amount of mileage. He says an easy 6, my pedometer read 8.12. 9.06/mile.

Ran the trails for the first time and it was beautiful. Not bad for golf course and green belts anyway. I look forward to be able to run some real trails soon. The best part was that my legs felt great at the end, and today as well. My real issue was the lungs yesterday. The asthma seems to be getting better, but it still has its moments.

Ordered my trail shoes which will hopefully come in next week. Secret Santa was good to me this year!

Will post my results for the year on the 31st. When I took measurements this morning, I was very excited!!

Conditions: 4:00 pm, cloudy, 65?

Distance: 4.53 miles

Avg HR: 171

Time: 37:54 8:21/mile

Notes: Inhaler, Advair, Allegra D, Advil on board. Toes not painful, a bit of tightness in hips at first but loosened up nicely. Could have easily done another mile or so, but time was a factor today. Had to get to Mass.

The new plan

So here's the new plan. I am not going to committ to ANY plan. You see, each time I do, everything falls apart.

For instance, last post I mentioned that I would run RTW today. Last night, however, my fate had a different agenda.

First I would be smart enough to smack my toes into the wall as I was attempting to step over the baby gate. Pain. Yes, lots of pain. But I picked myself up (literally) and finished baking the cookies. Later in the evening, I was smart enough to do the exact same thing to the exact same toes! Now how often does that happen?!? Seriously. I step over that gate probably 20 times a day. I've never done this. But last night, I manage to do it twice!!

I am still determined to run. I'll tape the stinkin' toes. I don't care about the pain, I have prescription strength Motrin!! I stick a nice frozen bag of peas and carrots on the toes, take some ibuprofen and prepare for the next morning. I laid out all of my clothes as is my typical ritual the night before a run. Then I went to bed. First I indulged in another episode of CSI: Season 3. Great show. Then off go the lights and I settle in for a bit of sleep. I seem to be having difficulty dropping off for some reason. I start asking myself why I am not falling asleep. At 2 am, dh comes to bed after staying up to wrap gifts and I'm still wide awake. Great. At 3 am, I give in to the insomnia and head downstairs to watch another episode of CSI. At 4:00 am, I decide I am sleepy enough to fall asleep so I move back to the bedroom. Finally, I fall asleep somewhere around 4:30.

Baby Boo wakes up at 7:00 and I jump up to retrieve him from his bed at which point I slam my already throbbing toes into the carpet (Yes, the carpet... I can't figure that one out!) and almost hit the floor again. Boo comes into bed with his hobbling mama and I succumb to the notion that I won't be making the RTW today. Dang.

So I won't be posting my plans anymore. At least not for awhile. I think I curse myself when I do. I'll just keep them in my head and surprise myself when I actually get to follow through.

Is this normal or do I need to consider therapy?

sugar high

Well, the baking got the best of me and as a result, my 5 miles didn't happen today.

I did manage to burn several batches of cookies, pecans, and chocolate, however! I also was a bit to indulgent on the sweet factor and I am feeling the after effects of the sugar high now.

Tomorrow morning I'll be sure to RTW and get rid of the yucky stuff.

To think I used to eat this stuff all the time...

Rain, rain, come on, come on!

Bring that cold front through!!

I'm discovering that I really enjoy running in the rain. Not sure why, but it feels so great!

Weight: 139.0

Conditions: 5:15 pm raining

Distance: 3.95 miles

Avg HR: 179

Time: 35:13 8:54/mile

Notes: Lungs doing better. Did not use the rescue inhaler before the run. This might explain my slower pace, not really sure how to explain the last two days times. My legs feel better since doing the intense stretching - thanks, Honey!

Frustration is a great running motivator...

On tap for the rest of the week - tomorrow I'm going to try to get in 5 miles followed by the RTW on Saturday morning.

12/20/06

19 years ago today, I was delivering this bundle of joy. Tonight I ran in her honor...

Weight: 139.0

Conditions: 6:00 pm humid, cooling off

Distance: 3.95 miles 9:52/mile ?? what is going on with my time?
Avg HR: 170

Time: 38:59

Notes: Went to the doctor today to ask about the asthma problems. He has put me on Advair with Allegra-D to help calm my allergies and my lungs down. I've been having to use the rescue inhaler a bit too much for my liking. Did use the Albuterol before the run to open the lungs up. Striving to get my breathing under better management and then I won't have to use the rescue inhaler as often.

Decision: I've decided that my goal is not the Houston Marathon 2008. Rather, I would like to run the Sunmart 50K. I mean really, why should Rick, Jon, and Holden have all the fun!?! Anyone want to offer a suggested training plan? I am also more seriously considering buying that bike I promised myself. Of course it will have to wait a bit longer as I am on a self-imposed spending freeze until June. February is Valentine's Day, March is our anniversary, May is Mother's Day...hmmmmmmm....

The Creeping Crud Returns

I woke up around 4 am with a bad case of stuffiness. 5 am brought a wonderful sore throat. 6 am brought the cough. 8 am brought on the "I can't get out of bed!!" Suffice it to say, the kids have shared their "gifts" with me again. Running on hold... dare I say it... AGAIN! uuuggghhh

12/5/06

Sick kiddos again. Not able to run the past two days. Will get out in the morning.

I did get my ChiRunning book in. I am hoping to get to actually read some of it soon. Seems each time I try, I get interrupted. I'll consider locking myself in the closet, but I don't know if I'll ever come out!

Going to try for 4 miles in the am.

Just do it

I had had it. Today, I woke to more of the same, hip, ankle and knees aching. I am not sure if it is from running any more, so I figured I better get out and "geaux" run or else I might just go nuts.

On board, advil, allergy meds, and inhaler. Can't forget that one.

Beautiful crisp morning of about 41 degrees. For someone who doesn't enjoy the cold, I sure love to run in it.

Ran 3.13 miles. 25:45. avg. 8:13/mile. One of these days I'll figure out where exactly the miles are and find my split times.

The first mile was a bit uncomfortable, but them I felt warmed up and ready to go. The last half mile or so, my IT bands were tightening up again. Little buggers...

Keeping the advil on board for now. Not going to post a plan for the week as that seemed to sabotage me this week!

I hope to run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and then do the Run the Woodlands on Saturday.

If these hips give me much more trouble, I'll probably need to call the doc.

I'm holding onto the notion that the first two months of running are all about aches and pains and that things will now begin to smooth out.

Frustrated

Feeling quite frustrated right now. 4 days of rest, still have very painful hips and knees. Ready to just run and medicate and see how it goes. Unfortunately, Black Belt Testing has descended upon the house and may take up the whole weekend.

I may run at midnight. Crazy people, stay out of my way.

Is it normal to feel so ansy...???
