131

Miles, that is. For the month of July. 131! I'm not bragging, I'm just stunned. The highest mileage I've ever had in any given month has been 80, and that was back in March.

Tonight, I closed out the month with a 6 mile run. I was supposed to run 4 at Marathon Pace, but I knew that was not going to happen. At mile 4, however, I committed to running 1 mile at the 9:08 pace. I came in at 8:49. A bit too fast, but hanging on for the whole mile felt great!

Mark rode alongside me, and it was nice to have some time to talk. When I hit that mp mile, I had to stop talking. I told him that he should take advantage of the fact that he could speak to me and I wouldn't have anything to say, because I really couldn't carry on a conversation. He didn't take me up on that offer. He says it's because he knew eventually I would slow down and he'd have to listen to me then... hmmmmmm. Poor guy. It must be insane living with me!

He asked me the dreaded "why?" question last night. Why do I want to run 50 miles? And for goodness sake, why on earth 100? My answer, a brilliant one... I have no idea. Maybe because I feel like if I can do it, I should as we never know what the future holds for us. Because if I can do that, I can do anything? Because if I do that, no one could ever take it away? Or maybe I'm just insane and there is no hope for me?

One thing is for sure. I love the support that my friends and family afford me as I venture into the training for these events. It does take time away from the family. It does require the family to sacrifice some things in order for me to do this. My prayer is that I can always keep them first, while still achieving my personal goals. Balance is crucial, and with a large family, it is difficult to find. True balance is never really found. What we do manage to do is put the efforts and time into the things that are most pressing at the moment. We have seasons. When we have a newborn, we are in that season. During the holidays, we have another season, vacation, another. Family illnesses, another. As long as my family knows that I will be there when they need me to be, than I can rest well.

89 degrees at 8:45 pm

The temps are really something right now. I know I should be used to this, but I am not. I guess I'm used to them, I just don't like them.

Waited til 7:30 to get out there tonight. Scheduled an easy 4 miles at recovery pace (10:35).

I felt great most of the run. The last part of the 3rd mile, I was a bit winded and my legs were not happy. I stretched for a bit, finished the run and felt better. I'm planning to ice the calves tonight.

I got in 4.2 miles at a pace of 10:39. Not too far off base.

I also got in my push-ups today. I actually challenged one of my students (16 year old boy... makes me feel really old!) He accepted the challenge and did very well on his first day of week one. Glad I am on week three else he might question whether or not I should be his brain trainer!!

I got all of my push-ups in and maxed out at 17 on the final level.

Only 3 months left of this lovely heat! Enjoy it while it lasts!!

The week so far

Last night was supposed to be a 5 miler with 3 miles at marathon pace, 9:08. I ran a 1 mile warm-up, 1 mile at marathon pace, and then I crashed and burned. I ran a recovery 1.5 miles and then walked the rest of the way home.

Later I realized I was running in close to 100 degree temps... dork.

What a difference 24 hours makes! I ran the 2 miles to the track and felt fresh, my pace was 9:15.

4 800s with a 4:10 goal pace

1. 3:52 - oops
2. 4:10
3. 4:13
4. 4:00

I ran the 2 miles home at a much slower pace...10:49.

Total miles for the week thus far: 16.2; total for July: 121

I have slacked off on Push-ups this week, but tomorrow, I will be doing them first thing. I don't want to lose the progress I've made so far. Besides, I'm hoping that I'll advance a level and actually catch up with JD! (fat chance of that happening, but a girl can dream, can't she??)

Tis a bit toasty out there!

Christmas in July would be quite welcome today! I didn't make the trail run this morning as I decided it better to sleep in after enjoying a phenomenal evening at the Journey concert last night. We got in at 1 am, and I was ready for a good long winter's nap.

I couldn't believe my eyes when they opened at 10:25 this morning! I knew I would be sleeping in, but 8:30 would have been sleeping in, this was pure indulgence!

There was a price for my laziness. I still needed to get my run in today and by the time I got out there, it was 93 degrees! That burning smell wasn't just your toast, Barbara... it was my sorry, sweaty self!

Mark rode alongside me and I was so glad he was there, but I felt ridiculous as I nearly crashed and burned on the Nature Preserve Trail. Of course that stump appeared out of nowhere and directly after I had thought to myself, "wouldn't it be quite embarrassing to fall in front of Mark!" Not even two seconds later, BAM! I hit a stump or root, not sure which, didn't care to look back to see what it was exactly. Thankfully, I caught myself before I ate the dirt and managed to stay upright. At that point, I lost the gumption to run and walked quite a bit. I was in a zone and lost that focus after tripping.

I managed to finish the run up, a 7.1 mile recovery run at 10:35 pace.

One other note, I am at 111 miles this month. I've never been over 80 miles before. It feels good, although I am a bit more tired than usual.

Loooonnnggg Run

After missing 3 days of running this week, Mon, Thurs, and Fri, I decided it was probably a good idea to add a few miles onto todays run. I had a scheduled 14 miler, added two more for good measure. It felt great to run that long, but it was a very humid morning.

Last night, I took the older kids to a wonderful production of Romeo and Juliet put on by students from UT. The play is acted out in a beautiful setting on the other side of Brenham in an old barn. If you are looking for something to do, I highly recommend Shakespeare in Winedale. You won't be disappointed. The only drawback was the two-hour drive home. I arrived back in TW at 12:30 AM knowing I had a 4:30 AM rise time planned. I'd safely bet that I got about 2.5 hours of solid sleep. I was even up before the alarm went off!

Pete and I ran the 3.5 from my house to Luke's, met up with the Fit group, ran 9 with them, and then ran the 3.5 back home. We were drenched. The run home was more walking than the rest of the day. Pete was zapped, and though I felt good, I hung with him because that's how we do things. He pushes me, I push him. It's a good team. We both know when to let the other have the rest that they need. It's usually me that needs the rest.

The Fit running was great. There's a nice group of us that are really liking the 9:45 - 10:15 pace we are running. What's funny is that some of these runners were running much faster paces last year, but are happier to run a more realistic long run pace this year. It's great getting to know the ladies. It's even greater watching them all look out for one another.

Post-run, I had a nice shower, a wonderful omelette, and finished the morning with a two-hour nap. Heaven, I tell you, Heaven!

Wimped out Thursday Night

I wimped out tonight. I just couldn't drag my sorry-self out for a run tonight. I have an early morning swim and a very tired mommy is resting on these keys right now.

***** WE INTERUPT THIS BLOG POST TO WARN ALL MALE READERS THAT THIS NEXT SECTION MAY BE TOO MUCH INFO ******
Edited to remove previous material as it was too much info for everyone! LOL

******BACK TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED POST ***********

I ran the track on Tuesday night and felt great. I ran the 2 mile warm-up there, did four 800s, and then ran the 2 miles home for a cool down. Total of 6 miles.

Here are the times for the 800s (goal pace was 4:15)

1. 4:08
2 4:14
3. 4:12
4. 4:04

I was happy with my efforts and felt great that night and yesterday.

Last night I was able to get out for a 4.5 mile run with Pete. Our average pace was a nice recovery rate of 10:10. (Should have been a bit slower for me, but Pete is really getting so much faster!)

I have some mileage on the books for this weekend, so a night off is probably not going to hurt too much...

Houston Marathon Issues

I don't really like to complain on my blog, I mean, it's really just supposed to be a place where I log my runs and set my goals. But this one is really getting to me, so I'll vent it and be done. Feel free to come back later and skip this one today.

Here is an excerpt from an email that I received today from Chevron Houston Marathon:

The Houston Marathon & Half Marathon are running events designed to accommodate those able to complete the races in specified time limits. Under no circumstances may walkers start before the 7am gun time in order to finish before the course closes. Those attempting to disobey the rules need to be aware that the Houston Police Department will strictly enforce the specified street closing and opening schedule as dictated by the official time limits and city permits. These time limits are put in place to protect all parties affected by our event and to ensure a safe and pleasurable running experience for all. The time limits are clearly displayed on our website and are prominently featured throughout the online registration process. If you are currently registered, yet will be unable to complete your race within the specified time limits, the Houston Marathon Committee asks that you turn in your entry for the specified refund and seek an alternate race to participate in.

Isn't that special? Why don't they just ask walkers to not register in the first place? It seems to me that they know exactly how many walkers they have registered and the approximate time that it will take them to walk it as we all had to state a finish time on our original registrations.

Surely there can't be THAT many walkers? I would think most walkers would do the half, but if not, what are they supposed to do if they don't meet the cut off? What do the runners do? Can't we all just help one another out??

Here's the kicker. The officials want anyone who can't complete the marathon within the time limit to turn in their bib and get a partial refund. Nice. What they fail to tell you, until you investigate further is, that, if they can't re-sell your bib, you won't get any refund.

If they can sell your bib, you will get a partial refund. As a runner, I would get 65.00 back. I paid 100.00!! I believe the final cost threshold was 120.00. If someone buys my bib, they'll keep 35.00 of my money and then charge the new runner 120.00 (the last cost of the bib when it sold out) plus another 20.00 charge. So my bib went from a 100.00 bib to a 175.00 bib. Nice...

If my bib couldn't be re-sold, then I get nothing. They keep the 100.00. Of course none of this was in place before the race sold out. Kind of elementary changing the rules mid-game isn't it?

Houston, we have a problem.

Check out Barbara and JD for their view.

Maybe I lied

I've been telling everyone that I won't be doing a Tri anytime soon. And I really meant it. But after hearing about Stephanie Johnson yesterday, I may just have to change my mind.

Stephanie passed away yesterday, at the age of 39. She has 3 beautiful young children and a wonderful husband left to carry on her desires to run the 2nd Stephanie Johnson Triathlon.

These folks need lots of help still. Volunteers, sponsors, etc. If you can help, please visit the race website and offer what you can.

September 7, 2008. May just be the date of my first Tri...

Sunday Morning Sweetness

Sunday was a great day! After a recovery 4 mile run, Sarah and Liz were kind enough to show me the trails from bike-view! They look a lot different than when we were running on them, that is for sure!

It took me a bit of time to figure out the gears, when and where to use them, and of course how, but I think I had a pretty good handle on it towards the end. It was a ton of fun and I look forward to many more rides.

Push-up challenge is still going strong here. I am about to move to the 3rd level (per JD). I can't believe how quickly I have made progress on these.

I need to try to get some swimming in this week. It is so hard with the work/run/crazy kids schedule, but maybe, if I wake up early, I can hit the Y pool for a bit before my day really begins.

We are just 4 months away from San Antonio! This will be my first race outside of the Houston area (not counting TIR). And now that I know Journey will be there, I am even more excited! We are going to the Pavillion Saturday to see them as well. Don't stop believing!! My music world would be complete if Rush decided to show up too!

We are 8 weeks away from our family retreat to Colorado. I am looking forward to running in many places, but most especially, Garden of the Gods. I still have a long-term goal of running the Ten Mile Run there someday. I realize that 10 miles isn't much, but I highly doubt I could go much further without serious altitude training and that isn't something I'll get much of here in Houston.

I am looking into whether or not we can have a tour of the Olympic Training Center while we are there as well. Rocky Mountain National Park, the Denver Mint and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are also on our list. Any other suggestions?

Saturday Morning Run

Ok, before any ugly rumors start, I need to let you all know that I am not planning a Tri at this point. I have a distant goal (late 2009 or 2010) in my mind, but I am no where near ready to even consider trying a tri.

First of all, I can't figure out how to breathe properly when swimming. The stroke is getting better, but I can't swim a 200 without a break, and even then, I am winded. My instructor says I am quite fast, but I can't help but feel like I am going to die! I was swimming a 40 yard in 23 secs, and then resting til the 30 sec mark, and doing another. After 4 of those, I was exhausted. I know my endurance will increase, but I am only getting to the pool once or twice a week, so it will take some time before I can improve.

Secondly, I now own a mountain bike. I love big, fat tires. They go over stuff, and as clumsy as I am, I need them. I am not sure how ridiculous I would look with my big, fat tires in a skinny tire race. Heck, if I could have training wheels, I'd consider those too! I have seen too many injuries from bike accidents to ever really feel safe riding one, especially on the street where I think some motorists feel it's a game to run cyclists off the road!

So, no tri for now. My efforts are directed toward the ultras until I get my 100 miler. I will throw in an adventure race this fall. No swimming involved. At least as long as I don't fall out of the boat...

Today's run went well. I am loving the Camelbak! Now that I know how to wear it, it is really wonderful. It's not heavy, I have plenty of hydration, and I can carry my cell phone, sports beans, and mp3 (if I need to).

I'm really trying to keep the LSD a LSD, and it shows in my HR. I have noticed a huge drop in my HR lately. Not sure what that means, but it must be good!

This week I was going for 32 - 33 miles. I came up a bit short at 31.1, but I think my 8 mile bike ride should count for something.

I feel like my pace is getting more consistent on the long runs. Hopefully I can continue to remain consistant.

Friday Fitness

Thursday evening I attempted a run, but it was more of a recovery walk/run. I needed to keep the pace very slow and I managed to keep about an 11:00 pace after the walking was added in. My calves were a bit tender after Weds. track.

The Trail Group was kind enough to wait for me as I was running a few minutes behind, and then waited for me to finish. They are a great group of people!

Once I got home, I iced the calves and took some advil. They seem to be feeling better, but tomorrow's run will be a slow one.

Today was a totally different attack for me. I hit the pool for my 3rd of 4 scheduled swim lessons. After an hour with her, I was so tired, but had too much to do around the home office so no nap was allowed... so sad!

At about 3 pm, Lem and I headed out for my inaugural bike ride on my new bike. I had to head over to the bike shop to have two bottle holders added on. I also picked up a couple of insulated bottles that fit nicely into the holders. Lem tired out pretty quickly, so I dropped her back off at home and decided to head to a local trail. I got about 1/2 way there and realized that I needed to get home for a special night with some friends. I was late in getting home, but they understood.

I rode a total of 7.5 miles in 45 mins. It was so nice to fly through the neighborhoods and the miles just ticked by!! My average speed (after dropping Lem off) was about 11 mph. If my running could be as fast...

Fun day, but I am whipped and have a 10 mile run in the morning. Off to bed!

Good day for something new!

Foo and I have been doing the push-up challenge for 3 weeks now, and we are actually repeating week 2 because we felt like we needed the extra week.

Yesterday, I did 22 push-ups! This may not seem like a big deal to most people, but thinking back to my initial test, I could only do 2!! WOW! I am feeling good about building my upper body strength. I have always had an extremely weak upper body.

I have no plans to turn into a she-man or anything, but knowing I can open the jelly jar without help is kind of nice!

Today, I finally did it. I BOUGHT A BIKE! I found a nice mountain bike online, a Trek 3900. I'll post pictures later. It was a sweet deal, and I am so excited!! I can now consider doing those adventure races the trail group is always talking about. Of course I do need to learn how to shift, when to shift, etc. I don't really get it, but hopefully, there isn't a huge learning curve.

The running is feeling good right now. I did a track workout on my own tonight. Foo rode alongside me to the track and then teased me, er I mean, cheered me on as I completed 6 out of 8 planned 400's. My intended pace was 1:56 - 2:00.

I warmed up by running the 2 miles to the track and cooled down the same way.

Huntsville makes me Happy!

Edited to add: I just realized that I missed the 7 Hills Meeting yesterday! I have been looking forward to it for months now! UUGGHHH!

I love running in Huntsville! I feel so good once I am done, and the miles tick by much quicker, even running at a slower pace. I figured out how to properly wear the Camelbak, so I am keeping it and I believe it will serve me well.

I had the pleasure of running with Liz Berry today. In addition to the wonderful trails, I had great company! We knew that we would be running a very slow pace today as we both ran yesterday. We made it a point to walk at every mile marker which helped keep our pace where we wanted it.

Sweet Saturday

I don't know why, but I love the weekend runs. I don't mind waking early to get out there and get the miles in. It's such a great time of the day and the people running with me are always so nice to be around. The yellow group stuck together for a majority of the run and this seems to be the trend. It is really nice to strive to keep a doable pace for all.

No hint of Thursday's run hung around today! I felt great! I did walk with Pete for a bit when his IT band was acting up. Other than that, it was smooth going, albeit, a tad on the muggy side.

I didn't get a chance to make it to RTW afterwards as I had hoped I would. I was way to unpleasant smelling, even for fellow runners, and could not bear to share that with them. Sorry I missed you all! Maybe next time! I hope it was a good run for you guys!

I'll be running in Huntsville in the morning with the Trail group. I can't wait!

Return of the Thursday Run

Last season I was plagued with yucky Thursday runs. Last night was no exception. They have returned.

A few contributors to the yucky run were:

1. Trying out my new hydration system, a flashflo camelbak. It was bouncing around the whole time and driving me nuts. I'll give it another shot, but if I can't get it right, I am sending that puppy back.

2. My calves were pretty tight the whole run. I needed to keep my pace much slower (which is what I was supposed to have done earlier this week). About the last 3/4 mile, they started to feel better and I was able to finish at a decent pace.

This morning, Foo and I hit the pool for our lesson. The calves were still pretty tight, but now they feel great. As much as I have been fearful of committing to swimming, I will admit, my body feels so much better after I am done.

Amber started timing me a bit today, nothing like a little pressure to make me crazy. I have no idea what is considered fast/slow/or otherwise. I was able to swim 40 yards in an average of 20 - 23 secs. How does this translate? No clue. Her pool is about 5 yards short of a typical pool.

Here are the numbers for last night:

Wednesday Redo

Today brought a nice run an hour earlier than yesterday and it made a big difference in how my lungs felt breathing in that humidity. I ran the same route as yesterday but took the hill portion from the reverse. I also was able to run with Pete which was nice, but again, I failed to keep my scheduled slower pace.

It is really nice to have my legs feeling so spunky, but I need to be mindful of the pace.

Tuesday morning with the hills

My goal was to keep this run slow, and hit a few hills since I can't make it to the track tonight.

I started out well, but kept getting too fast. I walked for a bit in mile 3 just to try to slow myself down, but as soon as I started running again, I sped up! It was a weird feeling. I was very tired, it was very, very humid, and yet, my legs wanted to go, go, go!

Beautiful morning in the woods

I am really enjoying my Sunday trail runs, and I feel like I am adjusting to getting the long runs in back to back fairly well. I really tried to stick to the 11:00 min pace for most of the run. I slow a bit the last mile to run with Pete. He was ready to stop at mile 6, but we convinced him to continue on a bit longer. Lord knows, he has encouraged me to keep running many, many times when I really wanted to stop.

It was still humid, but overcast and the woods always provide a nice distraction for me. I find I am running less and less with my mp3 on. I've only used it once this week and it was really not necessary. I never thought I would enjoy a run without it, but I really do.

Next week will be interesting. I have been wanting to run in the mornings, but due to my late nights, I've been running in the evenings. Because of some other obligations this week, I'll have to skip running with the Trail group folks and hit the streets on my own in the morning. I must admit, I really like running with the group, but I know I also need to be comfortable running on my own. I am too social for my own good!

The weekly mileage dipped a bit this week, mostly because of the hip and the funeral we had to attend.

8.3 miles in 83 degree heat

Got in a little more than 8 today with the Fit group. I saw some familiar faces today that were running with the Houston training group, (those training for the Houston marathon within the Woodlands Fit group.)

I didn't meet Christy though... I looked around, but I just couldn't figure out who you were, sorry! I did see a lady with a baby jogger, but she had a little girl, 3 weeks old. I was very inspired by her!

I just received my August issue of Runner's World and discovered a wonderful surprise! Bill and Dana-Sue Crews have an article written about them, with their beautiful children! It is a nice article with some great pictures. Congratulations Crews family!

I felt great today. My pace was slowed when I realized that several of my runners were no longer within eye shot of me.

I am officially back off of sugar. I've lost 3 lbs since starting this again. Sugar really is my enemy!

Thursday Night Run

I was able to get in a quick 4.5 mile run tonight. Average pace of 9:46. The hip felt good, but I am still fighting something. I have a very sore throat and headache. Funny thing is that I didn't have either while running!

Running on empty

Saturday I didn't run as I didn't think my hip would be able to last. Instead I helped a bit at the RTW as the Fit folks ran for their time trial. It was interesting being there at the finish to see the runners come across. I've never actually seen a runner take first place, so that was a neat thing to experience.

It was pretty hot. Several of the runners were feeling ill at the end of the run. I saw so many people that I knew and I loved cheering them on! It was a lot of fun.

I didn't run Sunday either. Again, I felt like the hip needed the rest. Maybe I am just a wimp, but I am not willing to risk an injury that will bench me for 8 weeks like it did last season.

Monday, after learning that our friends' son died, I was not in the mood to run, but I needed to. I ran hard, fast, and mad. My time was faster than it has been in awhile. It was a good run, but at the end, I could feel the hip screaming at me.

Yesterday, I awoke to a nice limp and pain from my low back to my knee. I headed into the chiropractor's office to have my self fixed up. He did a marvelous job, but I decided to let the adjustment settle. I am going to an easy run this evening to see how it feels.
